Main Types of Facial Skin

There are five main skin types. It is very important to know what type of skin you have in order to determine what kind of skincare you need.

The easiest way to determine your skin type is to blot your face with a dry cloth in the morning, right after you get out of bed. If an oily spot remains on the napkin, the skin is oily. If the oily spot is only in the center of the napkin, you have combination skin. If the napkin remains clean after applying it to your face, your skin is normal or dry.

To finally find out your skin type, wash your face with soap and water. If the feeling of tightness persists, and the skin is shiny and dry, then it is dry. If the skin is smooth, firm and elastic, it is normal.

For an accurate diagnosis of your skin type, it is best to consult a dermatologist who, after an individual consultation, will be able to accurately determine your skin type.

Dry skin

  • has small pores
  • has a matte (dull) color;
  • characterized by a low fat content.

Wrinkles form quickly on dry skin, especially around the eyes. Dry skin is more common in women aged 50+ years, in those who live in hot and dry, or in cold, dry climates. Dry skin can appear in women who do not protect their face from the effects of the environment, consume insufficient water for the body, etc. The skin becomes rough, begins to peel off, and cracks appear.

Dry skin care

When caring for such skin, the main thing is regular nutrition and moisturizing, protection from sunlight.

Cleanse dry skin 2 times a day:

  •  in the morning, cleanse dry face and neck skin with a liquid cream, oil, or milk. Wipe the face with a tonic lotion. Apply cream to damp skin, after 15-20 minutes, remove excess cream with a paper napkin.
  • In the evening, cleanse the face with cosmetic milk or cream. After cleansing the skin, apply a fatty nourishing cream containing vitamins.

Dry skin needs nourishing and moisturizing masks twice a week.

Sensitive skin

It becomes excessively dry and tightens even with the slightest contact with water, irritated by contact with clothing, weather and climatic influences. As a result, it develops redness, pimples, and pustules.

Sensitive skin requires special care

When it comes to caring for sensitive skin, it doesn’t matter if it’s congenital or acquired. In any case, such skin should be protected. Such skin does not like frequent changes of cosmetics. The most reliable way to cleanse and nourish it is to use products that are specially designed for sensitive skin. They contain mild cleansing substances, light oils and active soothing substances, such as panthenol, calendula oil, liquorice extract or chamomile bisabolol.

  • Use only alcohol-free cleansers to cleanse your face;
  • cleanse your face with mild milk in the evening;
  • before going to bed, apply a thin layer of night cream, preferably a special one for sensitive skin;
  • during the day, use a light but rich in fats and moisturizers day cream with UV protection.

Normal skin

Looks healthy, with even and small pores. Its oil and moisture content is balanced, and skin irritation is rare. If this type of skin is properly cared for, wrinkles do not appear until old age.

Care for normal skin

When caring for this type of skin, all efforts should be directed to keeping it in this state as long as possible. The main thing is not to dry it out!

  • cleanse your skin twice a day;
  • after washing, wipe your face with lotion or herbal infusion. Lotions have an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory effect on the skin, and tone it up;
  • apply a cream to the still damp skin. It will protect the skin from wind, sun, and dust. Apply the cream even if you are not going to leave the house in the morning;
  • in the evening, first remove makeup from the face and neck, then wash with soap and water, and then wipe the skin with lotion and apply a nourishing cream.

Combination skin

Combination skin is the most common type. It looks healthy, with a fairly even texture and oily areas, with large pores in the T-zone area, which runs across the forehead, nose and chin, with possible areas of dryness on the cheeks, eye area and temples. The skin may have a heterogeneous color. This type of skin, if properly cared for, also does not show wrinkles for a long time.

Care for combination skin

This skin does not tolerate water and soap. Therefore, we recommend cleansing the face and neck with decoctions of herbs in the morning: calendula, mint, sage, and in the evening use a cleansing cream, chamomile infusion, tea with milk.

  •  in the morning, refresh your face with slightly warm or cold water;
  • in case of a pronounced mixed type, additionally wipe the skin with a decoction.
  • then protect your face with a moisturizing day cream for normal to mixed skin.

Important: a nourishing cream for normal to oily skin should be applied more abundantly to the sides of the face, while the T-zone should not be overloaded. The cream should contain a lot of moisture but little fat. If the skin feels relaxed and not overloaded after applying the cream, then the cream is chosen correctly.

If the nose, forehead and chin sometimes become more oily, do not apply the cream to these areas of the skin, especially at night, if dry areas of the skin, despite the cream, cause a feeling of tightness, you need to add cream to them.

Oily skin

It is the result of increased secretion of the sebaceous glands, has a characteristic oily sheen, large pores that are very noticeable. Such skin is prone to acne and acne breakouts. Oily skin is not prone to wrinkles – excess sebum protects it from drying out.

Oily skin care

The most important thing for oily skin is its regular cleansing, the use of products that normalize the activity of the sebaceous glands.

Oily skin should be cleansed 2 times a day.

  • For evening cleansing, products diluted in water are best suited to really wash the skin: cleansing creams, cleansing gels, or cosmetic soaps. If you want to further refresh your skin, you can wipe it with alcohol-containing eau de toilette;
  • then apply a night cream for oily skin as sparingly as possible;
  • cleanse oily skin in the morning in the same way as in the evening. It is recommended to do whitening and cleansing masks twice a week.

Your aesthetician will help you determine your skin type and choose the right skin care.
